The problem for many male Trump supporters is that right-wing populism primarily serves the economic interests of plutocrats—not the interests of workers or the middle-class.

We are heading for a catastrophe, not just in terms of the climate, but shorter-term impacts on jobs and the economy, as the US loses leadership in key technologies and the insurance crisis deepens, amongst other factors.

As my mentor William Sloane Coffin said, "politics is economics in disguise." But now it is all in the open! The rise of the new oligarchy defies all left/right ideological constructs. I believe that the only way a true populist opposition can arise is that it must also transcend left/right categories that, if not transcended, will keep us at odds with each other. Class needs to be the only identity around which a better identity politics can flourish. Trump's election, which garnered more votes from a diversity of people than before, proves that the old race/gender identity politics is dead. Can we come together as citizens united against Citizens United?
